Mia Sakai is a Photographer, Creative Director and Founder of Aether Magazine. Born and raised in Ladbroke Grove, London, Mia grew up amongst the vibrancy of Notting Hill Carnival which heavily inspired her visual taste alongside her Caribbean heritage. These influences can be seen by the explosion of colour throughout her creative work, in which she aims to fill her images with ‘endless joy, hope and possibilities.’

In 2015, Mia launched my independent publication Aether Magazine during my foundation at Camberwell College of Arts. Inspired her my peers, Mia was driven to create a platform for young creatives to showcase their work in print. Following this, Aether was given commendation by the Stack Magazine Awards in 2018 and went on to create 15 print issues. For Aether’s 14th issue, ‘The Music Issue‘, Aether collaborated with artists such as JGrrey, Masterpeace and Chi Virgo. In July 2021, Mia collaborated with the Every Woman Biennial exhibition to create a one-night pop up event in Copeland Gallery to launch her 15th print issue. Mia currently independently curates, design and directs the production of Aether.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Mia has hosted a series of online seminars for her fellow young creatives, sharing her experiences with her peers. Topics included starting your own magazine, creating without funding and sharing her experience the editorial process. Mia also collaborated with Exeter University’s Roots Resistance Collective for an online seminar about Aether Magazine.

In 2022, Mia will go on to complete her Masters in Fashion Photography London College of Fashion.
